If the BeNeliga is a possible joint competition, why would it not be an option for Scotland, Wales, England and Northern Ireland, which are already know as the United Kingdom?
“The United Kingdom's status not only as the inventor of football, but also as a pioneer of the international game” ~ (Allen, 2021)
In the beginning of Football, the English Football Association (FA), The Scottish Football Association (SFA), the Football Association of Wales (FAW) and the Irish Football Association (IFA) were founded in that order. They started facing each other on a yearly basis, after which the idea came to form the International Association Board (IFAB), which to this day still consists of the four separate bodies. When FIFA was created in 1904, they felt these national associations were too powerful to be combined, but it was crucial they were involved in FIFA. This is why they were added separately. It still remains odd since none of them are internationally-recognised independent states.
Do you agree they would be too powerful to be brought together? And would this also mean they would play together as one national team?

I do believe that individually the English league is too powerful and wouldn't benefit from such approach, but on the other hand, the remaining 3 leagues could look into combining efforts in order to grow. This would bring about many benefits such as the Beneliga for Belgium and Netherlands. National Teams i would never put together, since its the representation of each country and their culture at an international level. I believe this idea would never be welcomed amongst football fans, but a joint league among "equals" would be.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Sebastian, The Premier is the best league in the world so it is too powerful. In case on Belgium and Netherlands would be a good idea creating new benefits. And I also agree with you that clubs from the same country should not be together because could cause problems for the nation. I mean a country wants the maximum participants of its nation as possible.

ReplyDeleteI don't think it was good for either of us. In the current premier league, very few teams from these leagues (Scottish and Wales) would be able to compete since the level in the English league is very high. High teams in the Scottish league like Celtic, would have a very secondary role in this league and their fans, used to seeing them fight for the title, would have to get used to sweating not to lose their category.
ReplyDeleteThe spirit of the BeNeliga is to help each other between football federations, to create a single and more competitive one. In this case, the English football federation would have the final word, as only English federation could increase the income of the other federations and respective teams.
I believe that they would be very powerful together, but in my opinion that league would not function correctly and this merge is not possible because England alone is already very powerful and much more influential than other leagues so it would probably take the lead and they could not function as one united team.
ReplyDeleteThey are very good teams. However, they were very good teams at the start of the last century. Now only England remains a great football team. Scotland and Wales are not fortunate enough to have 11 Gareth Bales per generation ...
ReplyDeleteCurrently how it is managed is quite balanced and fair, knowing that their could be many ways to modify the system to improve how it functions.
