Advantages and disadvantages of the BeNeLiga

Every competition has its advantages and disadvantages, as well as the BeNeLiga. In 2019 all organizations came together, including both national football associations to start an investigation into the feasibility of the BeNeLiga. The conclusions are positive and provided a basis for further research. The second study also showed that the competition between the Netherlands and Belgium offers significantly greater financial and sporting growth opportunities.

  • 3-5 times more top matches, for example AFC Ajax vs Anderlecht
  • Playing a bigger role in Europe, Only the Eredivisie has 1 place for champions league.
  • More international attention and dedication from fans
  • Equal opponents in the BeNeLiga and in the two national competitions
  • A more attractive and simpler format is created for every professional class
  • Smaller clubs can win prizes and promote in the national competition, Europa league
  • All clubs are improving financially
  • Extended travel distances for players and supporters
  • No more top matches for lower clubs
  • Fewer tickets for European football
  • Own football culture is lost

There are several advantages to setting up the BeNeliga:

The disadvantages of the BeNeLiga should be compared with the future situation of the Eredivisie (Dutch league) and the Pro League (Belgium league), and not with the situation of the future. The sporting disadvantage of both competitions compared to the major football countries is increasing.

Now that you have seen the pros and cons of starting a new competition between two neighboring countries, what is your take on these pros and cons? And do you see this as pros or cons? What's your opinion, let us know in the comments!

  1. I find the idea of creating a new competition between these two neighbors very interesting! In my opinion, there are more advantages than disadvantages as it would allow the Belgian and Dutch championships to have more visibility on a European scale. The opportunity for more clubs from these two leagues to participate in the Champions League, and potentially offer us beautiful game as it was the case with Ajax in the 2018-2019 season by eliminating Real Madrid of Karim Benzema and Juventus of Ronaldo.

Furthermore, I think it would be interesting to create a similar joint league between the countries of the UK. What do you think about it?

    1. Hi Ridoy, thank you for your opinion!

I understand what you mean with the interest of a joint league in the UK. However, do you believe there are enough other good teams in Scotland and Ireland to create this?

    2. I do think this new Beneliga is a very great opportunity, however I don't believe either that a joint UK League would be a good idea. The Premier League is already the biggest and most powerfull league in the world, and simply the scottish and the irish leagues are too small. This joint legaue would just expand the power distance between these clubs as, it would be just too much financial difference between the two. I believe a better solution would be a tournament, I don't know if there is one already, which included teams from all England, Ireland and Scotland, the UK Cup.

    3. Hi Sebastian,

the power distance is indeed one of the problems, but also the joint power they would have if they combined. It would be too big. If you want to read more about this, you can check out or other blog post: https://beneliga-2021.blogspot.com/2021/11/why-does-united-kingdom-not-enable-one.html

  2. Hi Sebastian, thanks for your reaction !

there is currently no cup between the UK, Ireland and Scotland countries. I wonder if a cup generates enough money. If you set up a new league you will get several new matches between top clubs that compete against each other, this provides renewal for the supporters. Which can lead to more income for the clubs. How do you think about this ?

BeNeLiga – an introduction

Most of you probably know very little of the Eredivisie and the Jupiler Pro League, the highest football leagues of respectively the Netherlands and Belgium. The Netherlands and Belgium are both small countries and there football leagues aren’t very big either, but football is really popular in both countries. Maybe you know some of the bigger clubs from the European tournaments, but beside some very rare achievements in the Champions League or Europa League, you probably can’t name a lot of clubs from either country. However, there is a lot of potential in football of the Netherlands and Belgium. There leagues attract many viewers from their respective country and football is really popular. The biggest problem is that the countries just aren’t that big, the Netherlands have 17 million residents and Belgium almost 12 million. This is nothing compared to the top 5 biggest football leagues: Germany (83 million) United Kingdom (67 million, France (67 million), Italy (59 million) and Spai...

BeNeLiga an inspiration for other countries?

There have been talks about the BeNeLiga for decades, but they are still from an agreement. There have been so much talks, but there is no breakthrough in sight. However, it turns out that these plans are an inspiration for other countries. In the beginning of 2021 there have been talks between the leagues of Scotland, Ireland and a few Scandinavian top clubs.  The UEFA is busy with transforming the European football leagues. The past year there was the re-introduction of a third European football league; the Conference League. But not only that, the UEFA itself was threatened by the big clubs by the introduction of the Super League. Fortunately this has been cancelled really quick by the immense pressure of the fans of these clubs. However, there is still a plan for a new Champions League in 2024, which would make the gap between the clubs even bigger than it now already is. The clubs from the smaller countries and leagues who don’t steadily play in the Champions League are loosin...

How does Belgium feel about the BeNeLiga?

All the 24 professional clubs In Belgium are unanimous about having the ambition of starting the BeNeLiga. They think it can have a positive impact on both a sportive level as economically. Furthermore, a study from Deloitte consultancy showed the teams that would remain in the national competition, would benefit from this as well.  Belgian fans on the other hand, are not exactly that keen on having the BeNeLiga. Belgian Supporters, the umbrella body of Belgian football fans, still have a lot of questions, are doubting about the travel distances and the difference in safety measures, and fear it could harm the Belgian football culture. Do you think this competition would be better for Belgium?
