All the 24 professional clubs In Belgium are unanimous about having the ambition of starting the BeNeLiga. They think it can have a positive impact on both a sportive level as economically. Furthermore, a study from Deloitte consultancy showed the teams that would remain in the national competition, would benefit from this as well.
Belgian fans on the other hand, are not exactly that keen on having the BeNeLiga. Belgian Supporters, the umbrella body of Belgian football fans, still have a lot of questions, are doubting about the travel distances and the difference in safety measures, and fear it could harm the Belgian football culture. Do you think this competition would be better for Belgium?

One thing that is not quite clear to me is how exactly will it work in terms of number of teams. How many clubs would there be from Belgium and from Netherlands? Will it be 50-50 split or would one nation provide more teams than the other? and what would this decision be based on? Moreover, I would also like to see the fans opinion taken into account if this league is created. Since they are the consumers, the ones who are going to pay to see this and to consume it, the decision shouldn't be taken if the fans are not in favor of it. They should do a series of awareness campaigns to try and inform them about all the benefits and how it would work. This way everybody be optimistic and looking forward to this new competition.
ReplyDeleteHi Sebastian,
Deleteto see how it would work exactly, you can check out or other blogpost: https://beneliga-2021.blogspot.com/2021/11/beneliga-introduction-most-of-you.html
I totally agree with you that the fans make football possible, so they have to have the final say on this. I really hope this happens, but as we have seen before with the Super League, clubs tend to forget this easily once a lot of money is involved. We will have to see how it will turn out with the BeNeliga...
I am Belgian and I support a team in the 1st division. However, my team is currently not one of the top teams of the jupiler pro league. Although, as stated in the article, I also believe that the BeNeLiga would be good for the level of the Belgian top clubs, I also think it is a bit of a shame. The clubs that will not participate in the BeNeLiga will receive much less attention. There will also be much less investment in these clubs, so I fear that the level will be even lower than it is now. Also, the effect that a less good team suddenly wins against Club Brugge, for example, will no longer occur and this is exactly what the supporters of smaller clubs live for.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jean here, teams performing worse like Jeans team Beerschot with 6 points out of 42, the Beneliga would mean the final blow to bankruptcy. Of course for teams performing way better like KV Mechelen this would result in a lot of benefits, but would you neglect smaller teams like Beerschot which in the end also include a lot of Belgian football history? -Arno P.
