Honestly, the chance of a BeNeLiga happening in the coming years is not very big. It’s not really popular in both countries, the fans don’t want it to happen and the clubs only benefit from it financially. So what are the chances of it really happening?
Both the Dutch Eredivisie and the Belgium Jupiler Pro league has called in the help from an international consultant bureau; the Twenty First Group. They’ve advised both countries to NOT implement the BeNeLiga. Their honest opinion is that it is not beneficial for both countries to try to fix the BeNeLiga. The consultant bureau thinks that it is more beneficial for the Belgium league to try and organize a league with 12 teams. They think that this will bring more entertainment for the audience than a league between Belgium and the Netherlands.
In the case of the new Belgium league this means that the first eight clubs will play a separate league to compete for the title. The bottom 4 clubs will compete for relegation/ promotion. If the Belgium KBVB would really implement this type of competition it would be the complete end of the BeNeLiga.
But there is a interim solution for this problem. It would be a solution for the two leagues to start with a cup tournament. This would be a great introduction for the two countries to start with their merge.
What do you think of this solution? Will it be a good start for the merge of Belgium and the Netherlands?

Interesting question, I think it may be more interesting for the fans as each country would like to see their countrys team to win. So that it will be pushing the identification within their countries teams. Even though I’m not too sure if it will work or not. There are teams like Ajax or PSV who are internationally very good performing in the recent years and smaller clubs might don’t like that. On the other hand they would have the opportunity to play against such teams more often and benefit from it within their teams and of course financially.
ReplyDeleteIm not sure if this will work, but for me this would be an interesting idea and worth a try
Thanks Leroy for your reaction!
ReplyDeleteWe think that a competition can be a good start to run a kind of test. If this is a success, we can look further to set up a competition. The only thing is that you can earn more money with a competition than with a tournament, because of the duration of a competition and everything that comes with it.
