BeNeLiga an inspiration for other countries?

There have been talks about the BeNeLiga for decades, but they are still from an agreement. There have been so much talks, but there is no breakthrough in sight. However, it turns out that these plans are an inspiration for other countries. In the beginning of 2021 there have been talks between the leagues of Scotland, Ireland and a few Scandinavian top clubs.

The UEFA is busy with transforming the European football leagues. The past year there was the re-introduction of a third European football league; the Conference League. But not only that, the UEFA itself was threatened by the big clubs by the introduction of the Super League. Fortunately this has been cancelled really quick by the immense pressure of the fans of these clubs. However, there is still a plan for a new Champions League in 2024, which would make the gap between the clubs even bigger than it now already is.

The clubs from the smaller countries and leagues who don’t steadily play in the Champions League are loosing every connection with the bigger clubs. This is the main reasons why this types of clubs are investigating the opportunities to reform their own competition. Purely to try and get the connection with the bigger clubs. More competition, more tv revenue and a more interesting competition have to lead to more financial opportunities. As everybody knows, these days in football everything is about money.
The UEFA is actually against this type of competition, but the pressure is getting so big that they can’t really handle it anymore. In the future it’s impossible for them to stop this type of multinational competitions.

What do you think, is this kind of multinational competitions a good idea? Is it possible for these smaller countries to close the gap with the big clubs? Let me know in the comments!

  1. I agree that there actually is a gap between bigger and smaller clubs and it gets more difficult for the smaller ones to succeed in this sector. Unfortunately, it really has been about money and finding ways to increase the revenue. I also agree that the UEFA could have difficulties to prevent these kinds of parallel Leagues to be created.

  2. Nowadays it is really difficult for small clubs to grow and develop because of the less opportunities they get, therefore the low funding to improve... I would really like to see the UEFA make some changes within the Champions League to try to close the gap that exists between big and small clubs, it would for sure make the competition way more interesting and the performance from the small clubs would improve.

  3. I think it is a very good idea to create lower level competitions so that small clubs can grow. In the end, the more teams, the more competition and more fun. I don't understand why UEFA is not in favor of the proposal, what arguments do they use?

    Great article and bravo!

    1. Thanks for your comment!
Because of European football, the UEFA mainly wants to keep the competitions separate. Since the BeNeliga would like 10 European tickets in this competition, UEFA does not like this. UEFA wants to give a maximum of 5 European tickets. At the moment it would therefore be more favorable to keep the two competitions separate. See this link for more info if you'd like to read this.

  4. It would be interesting to see the Beneliga concept in Scandinavia, merging the Danish, Swedish, and Norwegian leagues. That would go a long way to close the gap between those leagues and the Big 4 leagues which dominate European football. The increase in revenue would be beneficial and it would make those leagues which hardly anyone thinks about somewhat relevant. We could even see a Scandinavian club go far in the Champions league!

BeNeLiga – an introduction

Most of you probably know very little of the Eredivisie and the Jupiler Pro League, the highest football leagues of respectively the Netherlands and Belgium. The Netherlands and Belgium are both small countries and there football leagues aren’t very big either, but football is really popular in both countries. Maybe you know some of the bigger clubs from the European tournaments, but beside some very rare achievements in the Champions League or Europa League, you probably can’t name a lot of clubs from either country. However, there is a lot of potential in football of the Netherlands and Belgium. There leagues attract many viewers from their respective country and football is really popular. The biggest problem is that the countries just aren’t that big, the Netherlands have 17 million residents and Belgium almost 12 million. This is nothing compared to the top 5 biggest football leagues: Germany (83 million) United Kingdom (67 million, France (67 million), Italy (59 million) and Spai...

How does Belgium feel about the BeNeLiga?

All the 24 professional clubs In Belgium are unanimous about having the ambition of starting the BeNeLiga. They think it can have a positive impact on both a sportive level as economically. Furthermore, a study from Deloitte consultancy showed the teams that would remain in the national competition, would benefit from this as well.  Belgian fans on the other hand, are not exactly that keen on having the BeNeLiga. Belgian Supporters, the umbrella body of Belgian football fans, still have a lot of questions, are doubting about the travel distances and the difference in safety measures, and fear it could harm the Belgian football culture. Do you think this competition would be better for Belgium?
